Welches Buch möchtest du zitieren?

It is indispensable for a doctoral thesis, exam paper, Bachleorarbeit, master thesis or scientific paperwork to cite correctly. There is no doubt that the bibliography is the backbone of good scientific work. This usually very time-consuming work should be given special attention. Exactly quoting is one of the most important requirements for the writer of a scientific paper. A quote must be useful and not just gap fillers to achieve the highest possible number of pages or to show how much you have read. A citation is therefore useful if it fulfills a function, for example affirming the argument or confirming the statements made. A distinction is made in a quote in direct quotations and indirect quotations. First I would like to dedicate myself to the direct quotations below.

Direct quotes

Sentences, passages, and passages that are taken out of a book word for word must be cited and thus be included in the bibliography. A direct quote is marked with quotation marks and the source relative to the quote must be attached. There are different forms of the source specification, for example as a footnote or directly in the text behind the quote.

A quote used must be 100% original. If the original quote is changed, the author of the scientific paper must mark this exactly. In this regard, there are various approaches, such as with omissions (ellipses). Omission quotes are usually marked with three dots. But three points in a bracket and three points in square brackets are recognized ways to mark an omission.

Version 1: …

Variant 2: (…)

Variant 3: [...]

For which variant you finally decide is up to you. It is only important that you do not change the chosen variant during your written work. A uniform form is an important variable for the success of a scientific work.

Of course omissions should not be used so that the original quote gets a new meaning. It is important not to distort the meaning of the quote.

Furthermore, a distinction is made in the shortest quotation, short quotation and long quotation. The shortest quote consists of one to four words and the short quote of 5-40 words. A long quote is spoken at 40-200 words. The long quote usually begins after a colon and is indented as a citation block. In the case of quotation blocks there is, according to many authors, a special regulation regarding the quotation marks. You think that one can omit the quotes normally used to mark a quotation in quotation marks. A shortest quotation does not mean that you have to put each technical word in quotation marks. This is only necessary if this word is a neologism.
